2016 THC Award Function Report

The 2016 member and Award function was held on Tuesday 6th December in the Maurice Rioli room Punt Road, and strongly supported by members many of whom brought first time guests.

THC vice president Michael Perry welcomed members and guests and introduced two of the new players recruited during the trade period, Dion Prestia and Josh Caddy. Mike conducted a Q & A with each player, both of whom began their AFL careers at Gold Coast Suns, both drafted in the 2010 draft. Both are Victorian boys and both have already played 95 AFL senior games. To say both were super impressive would be an understatement. Both spoke positively about their reasons for joining the Tigers and their desire to enjoy long term careers and team success at Punt Road. Both stayed throughout the function, talking to members and guests, posing for photographs and generally embracing the whole night.

David Astbury, now entering his 7th year at Tigerland, was also in attendance and spoke positively about pre-season training form and his strong desire for both personal and team success in 2017.

President Rob Edgley then provided a run-down of THC functions in 2016 and presented a cheque for $15,000 to the RFC, accepted with thanks by CEO Brendon Gale. Brendon outlined the new AFL zoning system and the new RFC Academy program to which the funds from the THC will be directed.

Michael Perry then introduced Neil Balme who spoke with clarity and conviction about what he thought needed to be done at Richmond next year and how he expected that there would be an immediate and significant improvement in effort and a resultant on-field improvement. However he was equally quick to point out that there were no guarantees and improvement would only come if every-one within the Club was on the same page and committed to achieving the same goals.

Mike then invited THC patron Maureen Hafey to join Neil and announce the winner of the 2016 THC Award, and present the trophy. This was awarded to Dale Weightman in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the RFC over almost 40 years, during which he became a premiership player at age 20 (1980), captained the Tigers for 5 years during some of the leanest years, played a total of 274 games, got reported 16 times, represented Victoria on 20 occasions, won All-Australian selection three times, was selected in the RFC Team of the Century, became a member of the AFL Hall of Fame, and has been a RFC staff member since ending his playing career and currently holds the position of Club Relationship Manager. The THC Award is an annual award made to the person deemed to have made a significant contribution to the Richmond FC and who demonstrated Tommy’s 4 golden D’s: Dedication, Discipline, Determination and Desire. Maureen presented Dale with the bronze bust trophy of Tommy and Mike and Neil then engaged Dale in a lively and entertaining interview about his playing career and life at Tigerland.

Just when things were beginning to wind down who should bowl in but Kevin Sheedy. Invited to the stage for a quick chat, we were entertained by a classic Sheeds performance, combining humour, candour and the promise of something new on the horizon involving the Tigers and the Bombers. Watch this space!!

Maureen then assisted Mike in drawing the raffle, which ended formal proceedings. Once again the catering staff at the Maurice Rioli room provided a wonderful spread of finger food, and the boys at the bar were kept busy replenishing empty glasses.

As has become a feature of these functions, there was a warm, friendly atmosphere in the room and no one was in a hurry to go home. If you’re reading this and haven’t re-joined the THC please do so since your support keeps the flame of Tommy alive and contributes to the on-going success of the Club we love, Richmond.

1967 Premiership Anniversary

67 premiership anniversary

1967 Premiership 50th year anniversary dinner.

What a fabulous night! 200 guests packed the magnificent dining room at The Australia Club to honor the 1967 premiership team, represented by all but one living player (Royce Hart could not attend), and including members of the Swift, Barrot, Richmond, Strang and Richardson families.

Patron Maureen Hafey was joined by daughter Joanne, Peter and Kaye Hafey.

The players gathered privately before the dinner to re-live old times and swap yarns. By the time they entered the dining room, to a standing ovation and rousing rendition of “We’re From Tigerland” Johnny Ronaldson’s goal had travelled 80 metres!

Tommy Hafey Club President Rob Edgley welcomed guests and introduced Australia Club host member Philip Allison, then RFC CEO Brendon Gale who paid tribute to the wonderful achievement of 1967 when a team of average age 23 years, with no finals experience, defeated a highly fancied, more experienced Geelong team.

Former RFC President Ian Wilson, who remains the oldest surviving member of the 1967 Richmond Committee, spoke glowingly of the contribution of senior coach Tommy Hafey, then President Ray Dunne, General Manager Graeme Richmond and assistant coach John Nix (who was present on the night).

Michael Perry, centre half back in the ‘67 premiership team then talked about the game and showed some tv highlights (in black and white!). It looked a long time ago as over-head shots showed an MCG still with the old Southern stand, the old Olympic stand and the old member’s pavilion. What a crowd though, official attendance 109,000.

Following main course, Bobby Phillips conducted a spirited auction of the original 1967 Grand Final footy record, a fantastic black and yellow set of number plates FLAG 67, and a marvellous framed collage of Neville Crowe highlights.

Kevin Bartlett then took to the stage and proceeded to run through every player, showing highlights of their play (except Michael Green who as 20th man did not get a run on the day). What would a show be without a small hiccup and sure enough we had one when it was discovered that the highlights of Billy Barrot, arguably best on ground, and Roger Dean had been inadvertently erased!

Only KB could retrieve such a situation which he did with great aplomb.

Final tributes were then paid to Maureen Hafey for her wonderful support of Tommy and all the players, plus Barry Stanton who as fitness coach and runner was a key force in the 1967 triumph.

The night wound up with some lively music and we’re pretty sure every-one went home happy.

I think we’ll have to do it all again in 69!

Special thanks to Tracey Browning from Gamechanger Events for helping organise this sensational function.

Tommy's Legacy

tommys legacy

Tommy Hafey Club “Tommy’s” Legacy lunch Friday 15th July 2016.

If you think what you’re about to read is something you’ve already read you’re correct, this is exactly what we wrote after the April “Captain’s Call” lunch ……

“We often get asked, ‘how do you keep coming up with such great themes’? But in the Maurice Rioli room on 15th July, we can confidently say “we did it YET again”!

Any theme involving our inaugural patron Tommy is bound to be popular but this one, where we celebrated Tommy’s enduring legacy, was one out of the box. In 2005, we honoured Tommy’s life in football with a record attendance at the Grand Hyatt. It was a big, spectacular show with football celebrities extoling Tommy’s virtues.

This function embraced players Tommy coached at the four VFL/AFL Clubs, players who Tommy influenced in both football and life. Rex Hunt is passionate about the positive influence Tommy had on his life so he made an ideal master of ceremonies. Peter Hafey, brother and runner for Tommy at three Clubs, was instrumental in attracting some of the biggest names in football to the function including Brownlow medallists Greg Williams and Peter Moore, the Macedonian marvel Peter Daicos, premiership coach Choco Williams, the irrepressible Warwick Capper, our very own Robbie McGhie and many others from the Tigers, Swans, Magpies and Cats.

All players spoke of Tommy’s inspirational leadership, friendship and loyalty and especially of the close “family” environment he and Maureen created at every Club. Little wonder he achieved such an amazing coaching record. The Magpie players, including Ian Cooper, to a man expressed their regret that in five grand finals they could not deliver one premiership for Tommy. It still irks them to this day. The Geelong boys, Mark Yeates, Andrew Bews, Greg Williams and Darren Flanigan all spoke glowingly of the positive impact Tommy had on themselves as players and people, and the Club. The Swans, Warwick and Greg Williams, were equally effusive about Tommy’s impact in Sydney, an example of which was that in three successive rounds in 1987, the Swans kicked more than 30 goals a match and attracted crowds of 40,000+ to the SCG.

A cameo appearance by Dr. Geoffry Edelsten reinforced the sheer power of Tommy’s presence in the Sydney market and what a pivotal role he played in the beginning of what is now a flourishing national competition.

Mark “Choco” Williams prepared a special presentation to mark his appreciation of what Tommy had done for him and how his contribution extended beyond the four league Clubs to junior Clubs, schools and country football.

The Hafey family was well represented by three generations with our patron Maureen leading the way. KB, Francis Bourke, Bryan Wood, Eric Leech, Ron Branton and special Tiger guests Gerald Betts and Stephen Roach were all present to lend their appreciation of Tommy’s legacy.

The function climaxed with visual presentations of Mike Brady singing his song “Tommy” and poet Chris Driscoll’s deeply moving rendition of his poem, “Hafey’s Comet”.

The function ended with Tommy’s enduring legacy: “if it is to be, it is up to me”.

Yet again it proved the point, don’t miss a THC function or you’ll miss something special.

2015 Awards Night

2015 awards night

Award Function Report

The 2015 member cocktail and THC Award function was held on Wednesday 2nd December in the Maurice Rioli room at Punt Road. Once again it was well supported by members many of whom brought guests for the first time.

President Rob Edgley opened proceedings with a brief history of THC functions since the Club began in 2003, with 37 lunch and 13 member functions making this the 50th function to be organised in the 13 year period. During that time THC contributions to the RFC have exceeded $200,000. Rob gave a brief outline of the 2015 functions and a hint that next year would almost certainly see a major function dedicated to Tommy.

THC patron Maureen Hafey was then joined by Matthew Richardson to present the 2015 THC Award. This was awarded to Chris Newman in recognition of his wonderful contribution to the RFC over 15 years during which he captained the Tigers for 4 years and played a total of 268 games. The THC Award is an annual award made to the person deemed to have made a significant contribution to the Richmond FC and demonstrated Tommy’s 4 golden D’s: that Dedication, Discipline, Determination and Desire will deliver your Destiny. Maureen presented Chris with the bronze bust trophy of Tommy and Matthew then engaged Chris in a lively and entertaining interview about his playing career and finished by wishing him every success in his new position as Development Coach at Hawthorn.

Michael Perry then introduced the new players recruited during the trade period, Chris Yarran, Jacob Townsend and Andrew Moore, and conducted a Q & A with each. Chris, an established AFL player with over 100 games played with Carlton, joins the Tigers as a rebounding defender, Jacob an initial GWS draftee arrives with a reputation for being fierce at the contest and Andrew, brother of former Tiger Kelvin, comes to Richmond from Port Adelaide as a hard bodied, mature footballer. All boys spoke well and were enthusiastic about joining the Tigers and optimistic about 2016.

Maureen and Bobby Phillips assisted Mike in drawing the raffle, which ended formal proceedings.

Once again the catering staff at the Maurice Rioli room provided a wonderful spread of finger food, and the boys at the bar were kept busy replenishing empty glasses.

As has become a feature of these functions, there was a warm, friendly atmosphere in the room and no one was in a hurry to go home.

Captain's Call

captains call 2016

Tommy Hafey Club Captains Call lunch Thursday 7th April 2016.

We often get asked, ”how do you keep coming up with such great themes”? And it has to be admitted, after 38 themed lunches, coming up with interesting and entertaining themes is a challenge.

But in the Maurice Rioli room on 7th April, we can confidently say “we did it again thanks to Kevin Sheedy, Kevin Bartlett, Chris Newman, Kane Johnson, Dale Weightman, David Cloke, Bryan Wood, Ron Branton and Trent Cotchin. All (excluding Trent) former Captains who were wonderful players and great ambassadors for the game and our Club.

We were thrilled when Sheeds agreed to MC the function and he did not disappoint, with a sparkling performance culminating in a sensational one on one with KB when the two went head to head trying to up-stage each other.

Proceedings kicked off with Sheeds and Trent Cotchin, an interview during which Sheeds did not hold back, and to his credit Trent was up to the challenge and clearly demonstrated why he is our Captain.

Our oldest living Captain, Ron Branton, was in excellent form with clear recall of his playing days in   the 1950’s and 60’s. Ron was an exceptional player during a period when the Tigers were an all too regular bottom 4 side. His final year saw him Captain a night premiership, come equal second in the Brownlow and take out the Tigers best and fairest award. Then at the peak of his form, he left to coach Myrtleford and secure his future. Ron attends all THC functions and is a popular presence at Tigerland.

Next up were Bryan Wood and David Cloke. Bryan was a triple premiership player at Richmond who  joined Sheeds at Essendon where he enjoyed premiership success in 1985 before continuing as Sheeds runner after a decorated playing career.

After premiership success at Tigerland in 1974 and 1980, David was Captain in 1982, the last time the Tigers have featured in a grand final. He then made the controversial switch to Collingwood, where he enjoyed a successful career before returning to the Tigers to help KB and his young cubs, climaxing a brilliant career by kicking 8 goals in his final match, even sweeter because it was against Carlton and a rare Tiger win!!

In the absence of 1980 premiership Captain Bruce Monteath, Mike Perry conducted a roving mike interview with his son Rhys before Sheeds introduced the final panel, Kane Johnson, Chris Newman and Dale Weightman.
Dale Weightman is rightly recognised as a great Tiger player spanning 15 years but he is also a full-time employee of the RFC and as such has been a continuous presence at Punt Road for close to forty years, a truly remarkable achievement.

Kane Johnson grew up in a Tiger household but was drafted by Adelaide where he enjoyed premiership success before engineering a trade back to Richmond where he resumed his love affair with the Tigers, became a key player and Captain, before handing over the reins to Chris Newman in 2009.

Chris was an inspiring player and Captain who eventually became the oldest AFL player not to play in a finals series but then enjoyed the experience of three final series in a row before retiring to pursue a coaching career. He is currently a development coach at Hawthorn.

After paying tribute to the 18 living players who acted as Captain when the appointed Captain was either out injured or suspended or on interstate duty, the day ended with an amazing double-act between Sheeds and KB. It’s impossible to write about it other than to say there’s never been more laughter and hilarity than these two legends produced. Priceless, and for the fortunate people in attendance, an unforgettable experience.

Yet again it proved the point, don’t miss a THC function or you’ll miss something special.

Tigers Of The Turf 2015

What another fantastic day! Every year we say “this was the best yet” but every year it’s true. The Tigers of the Turf function, now in its fifth year, is definitely THE way to manage the difficult transition from footy season to spring racing carnival.

The Committee Room at Caulfield is the perfect venue to observe all the preparations for the Caulfield Guineas meeting and this year 185 guests enjoyed another splendid menu of entertainment, food, drink and companionship.

The day kicked off with football chat. Mike Perry interviewed Richmond Offensive Coach Mark Williams who had little inside knowledge about the Tigers 2015 trade and draft plans, but was most forthcoming about his role as coach of the Tigers forward line. Often confused with the other Mark (Chocko) Williams, Mark comes from an AFL player background with Carlton and the Bulldogs, and successful (three-peat) coaching record with Sandringham in the VFL.

Mike then introduced MC Bruce Clark who is without peer when it comes to knowledge of the racing industry, personalities, jockeys, owners, trainers, you name it. We are indeed fortunate to have him as our MC for this function. Mike quizzed Bruce about his new venture, GX1.

Bruce then spoke with MRC CEO Brodie Arnhold about the up-coming Caulfield season and the great Bart Cummings and his Caulfield Cup legacy. He then interviewed Brad Rawiller about his up-coming mounts and their prospects.

KB and Dr Turf, direct from their morning SEN program, then delivered their very best repertoire including tips for the Caulfield Guineas meet. Again, the message is clear: if you want to mix with the stars and get the “good oil”, get to the Tigers of the Turf function! Many guests were busy noting the tips and we subsequently heard on good authority that those who took note cleaned up the next day!

Next came our special guest for the day, singer-songwriter and mad Tiger supporter Russell Morris who had five Australian Top 10 singles during the late 1960s and early 1970s and is currently enjoying a career renaissance which includes a new album, Red Dirt – Red Heart. Russell gave a sparkling performance and had many in the audience singing along with his rendition of his big hit, The Real Thing.

After the main meal, Bruce Clark then interviewed Hugh Bowman who spoke at length about exactly what a top jockey’s life is like. Not an easy gig by any measure. (Hugh went on to ride three winners the next day at Caulfield).

Bobby Phillips and Dale Weightman then conducted the live auction which included a great range of items including tickets to the Emirate Stakes courtesy of Kevin and Jan Morris, a round of golf at the Victoria Club with Matthew Richardson and Dale Weightman, framed jockey silks in Tiger colors signed by Tiger greats, a table to a 2016 Channel 9 Footy Show, lunch for 6 at the Malvern Hotel with Jake King and Dale Weightman courtesy of Michael Burke, and finally, the Tiger Rocking Horse, a fitting conclusion to a lively auction.

Then followed interviews with trainer Robbie Laing and bookmaker Alan Eskander, who with his father Michael, founded Betstar in 2007.

Mike Perry then invited Jake Norton, Racing General Manager and the face of MRC to present the winner of the late Paris Kyne designed hat to the lucky lady and the major business card draw and raffle prize to the winners, with thanks to Bob Scarborough for the Moonee Valley race meet tickets, Courtney Garrett for the Hyatt Hotel accommodation voucher and Mal Brown for tickets to the Carbine Club Derby lunch.

The official proceedings of the day concluded with a rousing rendition of “We’re from Tigerland” and as usual, nobody was ready to leave and the conviviality of the day continued beyond the Committee room to adjacent bars for many guests.

So, the moral of the day is: do not miss this function next year!!
